Elspeth, Herald and Heir to the throne of Valdemar, must take up the task and go to seek outside help. But now, magic is slowly coming back and Ancar, an evil bloodpath-mage from Hardorn knows it. A mage couldn't even go into Valdemar before he was driven out because of the unseen "eyes" watching him or her. The fact that they didn't rush into a relationship and became friends before they did really brings a great deal of reality and sweetness to the story.Since Herald Vanyel's time, all forms of magic, except for Mind magic, ceased to exsist in Valdemar's borders. I love the relationship between Elspeth and Darkwind. It's amazing how Mercedes Lackey can paint entire pictures of the world with such detail. I spent a great deal of time with my ear buds in my ears as I gamed or worked. But I decided since I love the books so much to give the second one a try. The narrator in book 1 by the end was starting to annoy me and I wasn't sure I would be able to finish the series (listening I have already read them). Over all I find the whole stories wonderful and amazing, through they are geared to a younger crowd. However it is set in a fantasy world, with real magic, mind magic, spiritual magic, mystical creatures and fantastical races. The stories as a whole are really about growing and learning yourself (or themselves) and over coming obstacles.
